Ben-Gurion Day Marks a Vision of Israel’s Future in the Desert

(November 13, 2018 / JNS) David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s founding father and first prime minister, famously said that “Israel’s future lies in the Negev,” the southern desert region comprising 60 percent of the country, which today comprises only 10 percent of the population.

With the annual commemoration of David Ben-Gurion Day on Nov. 14 (the sixth of Kislev) marking 45 years since his death, why is it still important to reflect on the vision of Israel’s first leader and worldly statesman?
