“We are not called to proclaim philosophy and metaphysics, but the simple gospel. Man’s fall, his need of a new birth, forgiveness through atonement, and salvation as the result of faith, these are our battle-ax and weapons of war.” Charles Spurgeon
Social media is filled with opinions and polarized beliefs. YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are rampant with opinions concerning controversial topics like abortion, homosexuality, politics, climate change, religion to name but a few.
Many people consume these opinions as if they are fact.
We are not very good at acknowledging truth or even seeing it when it is front of our eyes.
We have become a deluded society.
For many winning an argument has become the basis for social interaction.
But as Christians winning an arguement with facts or knowledge will not help us bring people to Christ.
Evangelism does not require us to display our knowledge.
Christ and Him Crucified is the heart of evangelism!
Our human arguements relies on the our knowledge and the destruction of someone elses argument. This is folly. Only the strength and wisdom of the Holy Spirit in us can turn someone to Christ. That requires that each of us have a daily and intimate relationship with God. We begin the day focused on Christ and acknowledge Him throughout the day.
We pray as often as possible in an ernest conversation that lays bare or weaknesses and our sins.
When we discuss Christ with unbelievers we are not trying to beat them down and win we are actually up against powers of darkness that assault us all daily.
2 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
What we are seeking is the salvation of souls!
7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:7
God desires we impart the Gospel to those around us. This can only be done by us with respect and understanding. The current desire by many to win a debate is foolish and of this world. Although we may occasionally participate in discussions of controversial topics we must remember that we also do not desire any to perish. Let us therefore help plant the seeds of understanding and biblical wisdom in those we meet and know.
15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 1 Peter 3:15-16
