The Holiness of God; Is Your Understanding of God to Small?

"Well, this is going to be provocative. Frank says that your God is too small if you can’t understand why Jesus is the only way. Your God is too small if you can’t imagine that God would disagree with you on certain moral matters. Your God is too small if you can’t understand why God would kill a man for simply preventing the Ark of the Covenant from falling into the mud. This episode will help you comprehend who the true God really is. Continue listening to this podcast here: https://cutt.ly/avlQnz0 " from video introduction

The "Ark of the Covenant" from the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark

Frank Turek (in this clip from a longer podcast - link attached) reminds us that we are finite and God is infinite. God is the Creator and we are the created. Yet in our pride, humans often think their decisions and morality are better or superior to God's.

So what is Holiness, God's Holiness? Let's try to understand it.

1 Samuel 2:2: “There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you”

Isaiah 40:25: “To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One.”

Hosea 11:9: “I am God and not a man, the Holy One in your midst.”

Holiness starts with God. You and I until we depart this world are in the process of sanctification; the process of our becoming holy, becoming Christ-like.

In the end, God is holy in that he is God and we are not. Not an explanation but let's go on.

His holiness is what he is as God. We struggle to define it as majesty, divinity, or greatness for example.

Isaiah 6: 1-5 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his...

In this verse, we see that the Holiness of our God is such that our souls, our spirits can be overcome by mere proximity to the true essence of the Holy God. Why? Our sin within our being is known by God and is so opposite of his Holiness to combine the two is totally destructive to us. Sin is not compatible with God!

Let's look at 2 Samuel 6:6-7 6 And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.

The Art of the Covenant

The majestic holiness of God evokes in all of God’s people a holy fear, but it also evokes in us joy and happiness in God to overcome the greatest challenges of this world and in our lives.

Our journey to whatever level of Holiness we attain begins with our relationship with Chris, our daily prayers to him, confession of our sins, and repentance. If you have found yourself to be among the many shallow part-time Christians in our nation it is time to rededicate yourself to your Lord.

The language runs out eventually. The Holiness of God is beyond words.

And yet...The Holy One emerges from the Old Testament Temple, implants in a virgin’s womb, and births into humanity one night in history as an infant.

A child, called “holy,” the Son of God, is born in a Bethlehem barn - Luke 1:35.

Immanuel, God with us, an infant, a child, and later a man, of infinite and great holiness has Tabernacled among us - John 1:14.
