Equipping Christians to Defend the Faith - Why Knowing Other Opinions is Important

Video from TED

"We get stronger, not weaker, by engaging with ideas and people we disagree with, says Zachary R. Wood. In an important talk about finding common ground, Wood makes the case that we can build empathy and gain understanding by engaging tactfully and thoughtfully with controversial ideas and unfamiliar perspectives. "Tuning out opposing viewpoints doesn't make them go away," Wood says. "To achieve progress in the face of adversity, we need a genuine commitment to gaining a deeper understanding of humanity." from video introduction.

As Christians that live in a battle zone, in a fallen world and being each of us "the worst of sinners " we need to learn as much about the world as possible, to defend the faith and many other reasons. At one time it seemed that we as Americans could listen to each others opinions or points of view with objectivity. If that was the case it appears to be totally gone now.

In general avoid jumping to conclusions or assuming they understand another persons point of view. It is important for each of us to maintain a larger perspective on what is being discussed or written about.

Everyone always has their own opinion, and you don’t have to argue you just listen.

You should consider each person’s point of view and pay attention to the points that they are discussing or write about.

We must edify ourselves and allow for the Person of the Holy Spirit to work in us to clear our shallow thinking and see the world for what it is. Christ rules over all things and if we are mature in our faith we have an understanding that the Kingdom of God is at hand. We therefore cannot be reacting and attacking all those around us that we disagree with.

To begin with evidence for Christianity far outweighs any other religion or system of thinking, or political viewpoints.

Christians also need to understand what others believe in order to effectively evangelize.

And studying other religions, political viewpoints, intellectual points of view etc. to name but a few things will help to build our confidence that Christianity is the one truth.

On this blog you will often find articles or videos that espouse another point of view, often a distinctly pagan or anti-Christian or anti intellectual point of view. These posts or articles are designed to make you curious about what others think (perhaps erroneously) and then to go deeper into your faith and into your relationship with your Lord.

One thing I have learned in life is I don't know much. I like you know a few things, and I like many of you have gained wisdom through not only living but through my ongoing relationship with my Lord!

I may be in error on many things but together we can understand and disciple those around us and worship our Lord with honor and humility!
