Praying Through Cinema – Understanding Andrei Tarkovsky

"Stories have always had a strong impact on me, they affected the way I look at the world, they helped make me a better person, and I wanted to better understand this relation; I wanted to articulate all those intangible feelings that stories invoked in me, how they moved me, and how they made feel more connected to myself and to the world and the people around me. But above all, I felt the need to put this out into the world, to confirm that I am not alone in this, that there are others who share these feelings too, and long to understand them." from the LSOO Youtube Channel.

  1. The Mirror (1975)

  2. Stalker (1979)

  3. Solaris (1972)

  4. Ivan’s Childhood (1962)

  5. Andrei Rublev (1966)

  6. The Sacrifice (1986)

  7. Nostalghia (1983)

  8. Voyage in Time (1983)

In this excellent video essay from LSOO we are treated to a careful analysis of the films (only 7) of director Andrei Tarkovsky. If you have not seen any of his films they are excellent, perhaps an acquired taste but if you have the patience to watch you will be rewarded.

So I decided to watch all of his films back to back over a week or more. First I watched Andrei Rublev (1966) his first major movie, which is almost 3 hours long.

The Mirror made in 1975 is considered by many to be his best.
