Dan City of Unfaithfulness

Dan: City of Unfaithfulness

"Standing at the headwaters of the Jordan River at the foot of Mount Hermon, we explore Tel Dan — an ancient city with roots going back to at least 2000 BC, originally called Laish. This lush, spring-fed site is one of the most archaeologically significant in the Bible lands, and one of its saddest stories of spiritual compromise.

We examine the world's oldest intact archway, a massive mud-brick gate complex dating near the time of Abraham, along with the paved plaza, raised platform, and stone bench that once served the city's rulers and elders. Genesis 14 records that Abraham himself may have passed through this very city.

We then trace how the tribe of Dan conquered Laish in the time of the Judges (Judges 18), imported false gods and a false priesthood, and set a pattern of idolatry that would define the city for centuries. Centuries later, King Jeroboam built one of his two golden calf shrines here to keep the northern tribes from worshiping in Jerusalem — and we walk through the massive high place, horned altar, and priestly buildings uncovered by archaeologists.

We also look at the remarkable 1993 discovery of the Tel Dan Stele, an inscription referencing the "House of David" that provided groundbreaking extra-biblical evidence for King David's historical existence.

Finally, we reflect on what Dan's history of idolatry — ancient and modern — teaches us about faithfulness, true worship, and the subtle idols (money, image, fame) that still compete for our hearts today." from the video introduction
