• An extremely rare late 18th-century sand automaton depicting traditional rural trades. By simply pouring sand into two chimneys, a hidden gear train is activated, bringing numerous animated figures to life, including coopers, sawyers, carpenters, spinners, laundresses and butter makers.
• A fascinating musical auto-stereoscope by Auguste Lassueur, equipped with a coin mechanism. Designed for public venues in the late 19th century, this ingenious machine combined music and automatically changing stereoscopic views, offering visitors a unique immersive experience.
• A magnificent magician automaton attributed to Phalibois. Performing the famous cups-and-balls trick, the magician makes oranges, dice, cards and balls appear and disappear while addressing the audience with expressive movements of the head, eyelids and mouth.
• A rare drinking automaton by Roullet-Decamps depicting a seated gentleman who actually pours liquid from a bottle into a cup before drinking it.
• The famous portable mechanical piano known as "Le Mongol", one of the oldest pieces in the museum. Dating from the 1830s, this remarkable instrument was carried by travelling musicians and represents an important precursor of the mechanical piano.
• A unique animated music box featuring a snake winding itself around a palm tree while the music plays. A spectacular and highly unusual example of mechanical ingenuity.
• An exceptional Pierrot Writer automaton created in the 1980s by André Soriano, inspired by the legendary Vichy automaton. Its partially undecorated body reveals the fascinating mechanics hidden beneath the movements.
• A contemporary automaton by Renato Boaretto depicting an Amazon riding a rearing horse, demonstrating the continuity of automaton art into the modern era.
The history of automata stretches back centuries.
