The video describes melancholy as, “a species of sadness that arises when we’re open to the fact that life is inherently difficult, it's not an illness, it's part of being human.

On Feeling Melancholy

Do you ever feel melancholy?

The Causes of Melancholy and despair include life-altering events though it should not be confused with clinical unhappiness or depression. You can become blue from a triggering event, such as a death, job loss, break-up, or move. When you are dealing with the blues, you are still able to go about your daily activities.

According to Diane Barth (psychotherapist and psychoanalyst):

“I think [that] for many of us, something like this isn’t so much a matter of it being an escape from stronger emotions as it is a way of helping us process emotions we might have more trouble with.”
