On the Unmaking of Humanity - Paul Kingsnorth

"The modern scientific worldview is deeply intertwined with control and a desire to dominate nature through technology, framing this as a form of twisted, almost religious ambition to become "gods" by transcending material limits such as time, energy, and mortality. This vision aligns with a demonic reinterpretation of the Garden of Eden’s offer to be like gods, using technology not just to improve life but to escape the constraints of nature altogether. Science, rooted in division and reductionism, is portrayed not as neutral or purely objective but as a narrow instrumentalism driven largely by corporate interests, aimed at managing and exploiting the world rather than honouring its sacred mystery. This desacralization of reality leads to a "reign of quantity" where mass production and material abundance mask the loss of spiritual essence, cultural richness, and meaningful relationships, especially between people and their places, communities, and natural environments. Modern life severs these bonds, replacing them with superficial substitutes like social media, contributing to rootlessness and dissatisfaction. The relentless extraction of natural resources, powered by fossil fuels, feeds this project to break free from nature’s laws, creating what Kevin Kelly calls the "technium," a technological organism striving to transcend material limits and achieve immortality—effectively a new, human-made kingdom of God. This techno-utopian pursuit, openly discussed by Silicon Valley leaders, mirrors a modern, secular gospel that replaces divine mystery and humility with hubristic self-deification through technological mastery, raising profound spiritual and ecological concerns.
