Restoring the American Freedom Train and The Great Seal of the United States
"Between 1975 and 1976, the American Freedom Train rolled across the nation behind steam and steel, carrying the story of America in motion. Fifty years later, we can revisit that story as the Freedom Train's inaugural steam locomotive has been cosmetically restored and returned to its original ceremonial dress.
MW Solutions, a rail preservation firm with expertise in steam locomotives, recently partnered with @borailmuseum for their rehabilitation of American Freedom Train No. 1, and one of the finishing touches in the 5-month effort was the recreation of the Great Seal of the United States — a meticulous, hand-painted work.
Through longstanding relationships within the preservation community, FMW’s restoration team entrusted this final piece to nationally recognized fine artists David and Liné Tutwiler, whose connection to the original Freedom Train era runs deep. From scaffolding and sketches to gold leaf and final varnish, this film captures the meeting point of preservation, patriotism, and pure craftsmanship. Revisit the old-world artistry on American steel.
The cosmetic restoration of AFT 1 was greatly assisted by a Save America’s Treasures grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services." from the video introduction
