The Church in Thyatira

"Thyatira bordered upon Mysia on the north and Lydia on the south. It was 30-40 miles southeast and inland of Pergamus and a Macedonian colony established by Alexander the Great after the destruction of the Persian empire. It was originally a military outpost protecting the road from Pergamus to Sardis.

Thyatira was a town of trade. There were more trade guilds known here than any other Asian city. Believers who were members of these trades had a hard time not compromising in view of the pressure from these guilds to worship at various temples and attend guild feasts, most having religious connotations...."
