Proverbs 20: 1
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler,
and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.
“Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” — 1 Peter 1:13 (ESV)
The opposite of spiritual sobriety is when someone is “drunk” in the world’s ways and the desires of their flesh. Spiritually-drunk people are always lost in a fog of laziness and ignore God’s commands. They become slaves to their own unrestrained impulses rather than obedience to God.
So we must ask ourselves are we living life our way or God's way?
Jesus says in Luke 21:34: ““Be on your guard, so that your minds are not dulled from carousing, drunkenness, and worries of life.” The word we must pay attention to is “dulled.” Some translations use “weighted down.” Jesus is pointing out here that there is a certain mindset, overly concerned or participating in the sinful or worldly things, will lead us to a spiritual stupor and intoxication. You then need more and more of the world, more sin, more sex, more drugs, more power, more control etc. to stay high on the world.
I am sure this describes many of you. I was that way for many years, so intoxicated with success and money etc. that I missed many things in life. But God was good and gave me several thorns in the flesh to keep me humble.
I praise him today for my multiple cancers, surgeries etc. They keep me humble even to this day!
Put down your phone, get off social media and read the Bible, pray, confess and repent. Christ is waiting!
