The Moabites were a people who lived in the territory east of the Dead Sea in the modern day Kingdom of Jordan. They appear in the Pentateuch, in Judges, Samuel, and Kings. They are said to have shameful origins and are targets of prophetic ire. History and archaeology offer some insights into when and how the kingdom of Moab developed.
