Interstellar: Love Transcends Dimensions of Time and Space
Maybe we’ve spent too long trying to figure all this out with theory. So listen to me, when I say that love is not something we invented. It’s observable, powerful. It has to mean something. “Love is the one thing that transcends time and space.”

Amelia Brand (Ann Hatheway) made this statement in the movie Interstellar. Interstellar is a 2014 science fiction film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan. The film follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for humanity.
This is the quote that defines the movie and raises the question is love more powerful than anything else? The film does not point to Christ, but it points to love and many other virtues such as altruism, loyalty, family, humility and compassion.
Max Lucado states in his book 3:16; "Love. We’ve all but worn out this word. This morning I used love to describe my feelings toward my wife and toward peanut butter. Far from identical emotions. I never proposed to a jar of peanut butter (though I have let one sit on my lap during a television show). Overuse had defused the word, leaving it with the punch of a butterfly wing."
The word ‘love’ when used correctly has a type of weight to it. Love is a core aspect of God’s character, His Person. All of God’s attributes are in perfect harmony and everything he does is loving, just as everything He does is just and right.
What is love? Is it a power, a force? We all desire love, yet the love we generally desire is love on our terms.
Psalms 33 speaks of Gods faithfulness and love as one in the same. God speaks worlds into being, his mere breath fills the heavens and whatever he says happens and whatever he plans comes to pass. God sees everything in the hearts of men (you and me) and watches every move we make. We see his power at work on all levels of existence. Without that power, love is only sentiment.
All of that power is the power of his love expressed in sustaining life and providentially going about the business of maintaining creation. The power that spoke the stars into existence is the power that Jesus trusted when he spoke, “It is finished.” God’s Love was present in eternity past and has transcended time and space to continue to be active in the world and in our lives. The dialogue spoken in Interstellar requires us to pause and consider the profound and fundamental nature of God’s love for us.
