The Topography of Truth--Unlocking the Biblical Map to Bring the Bible to Life - John Barnett

"Have you ever wondered why biblical battles happened where they did, or why the Sea of Galilee was prone to such violent, sudden storms? Join John Barnett as we unlock the 3D map of the Holy Land.

In this session, we will see that the maps in the back of your Bible aren't just filler—they are the key to unlocking the dramatic "why" behind the events of Scripture. Here is what we will cover:

1. From Dan to Beersheba: Visualizing the Promised Land

Scripture References: General Old Testament narratives referencing the tribal allotments and boundaries.

Summary of Coverage: When the Bible describes the land "from Dan to Beersheba," it is giving us a geographic picture from the furthest north to the furthest south. We will look at how the twelve tribes settled the land and why localizing these events on a map transforms our understanding of how the Israelites lived and moved.

2. Iron Chariots vs. The Central Mountains (The Philistine Conflict)

Scripture References: 1 Samuel 17 (Goliath of Gath), 1 Samuel 31 (King Saul at Mount Gilboa).

Summary of Coverage: Have you ever wondered why the Israelites didn't just easily defeat the Philistines, or why the Philistines didn't overrun Israel with their advanced iron chariots? The answer is geography! The Philistines were highly advanced "sea peoples" (Greeks) who settled on the flat coastal plains of the Gaza Strip. The Israelites, however, survived by living up in the rugged central mountain range where chariots couldn't travel.

We will explore how the Israelites constantly cut the Philistines off at the mountain passes, and how King Saul tragically died on the slopes of Mount Gilboa when chariots roared up a pass to reach him.

3. The Topography of Storms and Miracles

Scripture References: John 4 (Woman at the Well in Shechem), Matthew 8 / Mark 4 (Storms on the Sea of Galilee), Acts 1 (Ascension at the Mount of Olives).

Summary of Coverage: We will trace the footsteps of biblical history through the dramatic elevation changes of Israel, passing through Hebron (where Abraham is buried), Bethlehem, Shechem, and the Mount of Olives. You will also discover the fascinating meteorological reasons behind the biblical accounts of violent storms on the Sea of Galilee. Because the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee sit over 600 feet below sea level, cold fronts dropping from the high mountains collide with the trapped, hot, moist air of the valley, causing explosive storms. We will also see why the Dead Sea is constantly evaporating into a hyper-salty body of water." from the video introduction
