Why Dark City Still Looks Like a Billion Bucks

"John Murdoch, portrayed by Rufus Sewell, awakens in a hotel bathtub, grappling with a severe case of amnesia. As he stumbles into the chaos of his hotel room, he receives an urgent call from Dr. Daniel Schreber, played by Kiefer Sutherland, who advises him to escape from a mysterious group known as The Strangers. In a chilling turn of events, John uncovers a gruesome scene – the corpse of a ritualistically murdered woman lies before him, alongside a bloody knife. Fleeing just as The Strangers arrive, he embarks on a frantic quest to piece together his identity and locate his wife, Emma, portrayed by Jennifer Connelly.

As he navigates the dark and eerie city, which is trapped in an eternal night, he soon becomes the prime suspect in a series of violent murders that he cannot remember committing. The relentless police inspector, Frank Bumstead, begins to investigate him, adding another layer of tension to John’s plight. During the perpetual midnight, John witnesses the strange happenings around him, including citizens falling into a comatose state. Disturbingly, he also discovers that he possesses psychokinetic powers akin to those of The Strangers, which he utilizes to evade capture.

John’s investigation leads him through a series of cryptic clues and conversations with his family, all while he longs to return to his hometown, Shell Beach. However, his attempts to escape the city are thwarted by the Strangers, who are deeply troubled by John’s anomaly—his awakening during their midnight operations. They capture one of their own, Mr. Hand, injecting him with John’s lost memories in hopes of locating him..." from the article: Dark City (1998) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained
