Why Was Sauron Hiding at Dol Guldur During The Hobbit? LotR Lore
"Why did Sauron hide, posing as the Necromancer of Dol Guldur instead of returning to Mordor? After the Last Alliance shattered his power and Isildur cut the One Ring from his hand, the Dark Lord's spirit fled east into the unmapped wilds of Middle-earth and lingered there for the better part of a thousand years. Yet when Sauron finally turned back toward the West, he did not go home to Barad-dûr. Instead he crept into the southern eaves of Greenwood the Great and raised the fortress of Dol Guldur upon the bare hill of Amon Lanc, and there he dwelt in secret for over a thousand years as the Necromancer.
In this Tolkien lore deep dive we explore exactly why Sauron chose Dol Guldur over Mordor, and what that decision reveals about the most patient villain in the legendarium.
