Why You Misunderstand Biblical Cosmology And Why It's A Big Deal – Michael Heiser | Part 2

"In Part 2 of the classic lecture series, Heiser argues that Deuteronomy 32 does not deny the existence of other spiritual beings but instead asserts Yahweh’s incomparability, showing that phrases like “there is no other god with him” are claims of unique supremacy within a world where many gods and divine beings are real. He illustrates this by comparing Yahweh’s language to declarations like Babylon’s and Nineveh’s “there is none besides me,” which affirm superiority, not the non‑existence of rivals, and then insists that Scripture must be interpreted from the ancient Israelite worldview—the “Deuteronomy 32” perspective—where God presides over a council of sons of God rather than from later church traditions or modern theological constructs. He rejects the “X‑Files” view of inspiration, where authors are imagined as mindless puppets, in favor of a providential model in which God shapes human writers through their entire lives so that they write freely yet faithfully, thereby preserving both the Bible’s humanity and its reliability. He also revisits the term monogenēs (“one‑of‑a‑kind”) in John 3:16 and Hebrews 11:17, showing that it highlights Jesus’ and Isaac’s unique, promissory status rather than chronological or numerical singularity, and then ties this to Eden as a cosmic council‑dwelling—a divine mountain‑garden temple where God, his heavenly family, and humanity are meant to rule together, so that being human equals being God’s image‑bearer by status, not by some inner quality. Finally, he connects this Edenic vision to the New Testament hope in which believers are restored as God’s renewed council, conformed to Christ’s image and destined to rule even over angels, fulfilling the original mandate on a global, eschatological scale and revealing that God does not need shared rule but freely chooses to include a blended family of divine and human beings in his cosmic purposes." from the video introduction
