How Christians Defying Government is a Sin!

Updated: Nov 27, 2022

We live in rebellious times yet humans, sinful humans have always rebelled against God.

In America today we are no different.

We rebel, we sin, we claim self-righteousness and cite scripture.

The recent events in our nations capitol and ongoing belligerence amongst people claiming tribal political positions runs counter to God's word.

How?

Take time to listen to the first ten minutes of this video where Martyn Iles explains that scripture is specific in regard to theses behaviors.

We have 3 options:

Obey God and government

Obey God and not government

Obey government but not God (never do this!)

God requires us to pursue the first choice by ever means possible.

Which means we will find ourselves obeying very bad and disagreeable laws.

What then?

God says it does not matter, obey the government anyway!

Ok so I am betting many reading this don't like this or reject it completely. Yet God is clear.

Making excuses for breaking laws becomes pride and arrogance!

This is not an opinion this is scripture, God's word, we reject it or we obey it, very simple.

Be reflective and ask your self what you are doing.

Some will rebel and say I will not obey without questioning. God is not saying blindly obey government, he allows us to question he is just telling us not to go around rebelling against everything we disagree with. You get what we have now in our culture when you do.

And yes Christians who claim patriotism etc. it seems you are breaking the system just as badly as those your rail against. Look at the news. There is no evidence that Christians are doing any more than any one else to make things better in fact it seems to me and others we have made ourselves a target and laughing stock with our foolish claims and behavior.

1 Peter 2: 13-17

13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

Many will claim confirmation bias and point a finger to those Romans 9 Christians! Well yes Romans 9 is in the Bible!

Romans 9: 16-21

16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[g] 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

19 One of you will say to me: “Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?” 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’”[h] 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?

So if we find ourselves being disobedient and sinful we should repent and move on. Yes even if we don't like the red or blue or whatever color. Even if we disagree with the government or its laws or policies. If you don't like the laws then get busy to change them as part of the system.

Israel throughout its history have been sinful and disobedient people and God has disciplined them for it even to the point or destroying their nation multiple times.

So ask your self are you a person of unclean lips, disobedient and sinful?
