'I make things because it nourishes me' | Noel W. Anderson Timestamp

"Noel W. Anderson is an American artist and educator whose practice moves between tapestry, photography, and material experimentation, challenging how images are constructed and understood. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, his work draws from early experiences with drawing, archives, and visual culture, evolving into a distinct language rooted in weaving, distortion, and surface.

Over time, Anderson has developed a process that transforms digital and photographic images into woven tapestries, blurring the line between painting and textile. “I’m trying to get a different kind of painting into the world… a way of painting without paint.” Now based in New York, his practice continues to expand through material exploration and research.

“I make things because it nourishes me… the work is filling.” This sense of necessity drives his approach, creating work that aims to resonate beyond the visual through texture and atmosphere.

At the core of his practice is a tension between attraction and skepticism. “The work has always been about being suspicious of images, but being seduced by them so easily.” Drawing from magazines, archives, and digital screens, he breaks down and reconstructs images to reveal new meaning.

Anderson’s philosophy is grounded in movement and discovery. “The work doesn’t feel like work to me because it’s study… that’s what we came to this planet for.” In the studio, he embraces uncertainty as part of the process. “I want to come in here and be so confused that I have to sit here for hours… to figure it out.”

For Anderson, making art is about staying in motion. “You have to keep moving… the work has to continue to move.” from the video introduction
