About Time (The difference between chronos time and kairos time in Christian spirituality)

In this video from 3 Minute Theology the difference between Chronos and Kairos time is explained.

About Time (The difference between chronos time and kairos time in Christian spirituality)

God has chosen to disrupt his world through the pandemic. We like the humans before us have fallen into apostasy and sin. Our technology has only exacerbated our sin and dysfunction.

When he permitted this disease to infect the world, he had You and I in mind, as well as ALL people.

Humanity are God’s children; we are his family. We like wayward and ungrateful children pursue our hearts which are desperately wicked. We are blinded to the ultimate reality seeing life through a glass darkly, through the blinders of our sin nature.

We are indeed lamentable considering all the things we do to each other and to the world.

God’s Holy Word spills out into life. God’s sovereignty and providential control covers all our lives. God even provides for those that are evil and hate him.

Faith, prayer, and humility will take us to the personal relationship we need. The Christian Way of life is not a hobby or an activity. We are required to surrender all our desires and intentions to God. There is no other way.

So right now, during this “Time” God has provided you may be out of work, you and your family may be struggling, and you are fearful. You need food and other things for daily living.

Yet God will provide but you must be active, you must not be idle.

In our western culture we have for too long been slaves to the god of the clock. Time management has become an idol. Before the pandemic myself and many other people I knew were so weary from the constant race to productivity. Money and efficiency are king and nothing else mattered.

God had a different plan and I praise him for that.

Gods control and oversight of time is beyond our cognitive ability to understand. Yet we have a sense through scripture that in addition to Chronological time God sets aside special periods of time, Kairos Time for changing the world and all of us in it.

Now is such a time. This is an opportune moment in our culture and in your life, do not waste it!!

Kairos (Ancient Greek: καιρός) is an Ancient Greek word meaning the right, critical, or opportune moment. The ancient Greeks had two words for time: Chronos (χρόνος) and Kairos. The former refers to chronological or sequential time, while the latter signifies a proper or opportune time for action.

God tells us we must work. But sometimes he provides different work for us. A paycheck is not always involved. Look around at your community, what can you do to help someone? Life is never just about us. Contact your church or a church and see what need you can meet. Email and make some phone calls and see where people need help.

Now is the time to make new habits of Bible reading and prayer. There are no excuses. Reading scripture and prayer are necessary for your day.

Personal enrichment may have been neglected in the past. Now is the time to start that hobby or read that book.

Continue to look for gainful employment, do not be idle.

Your value as a person does not come from your work or career. Any productivity we have in life comes from God and not us.

John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me

God is preparing many people around the world for what comes next. He is preparing you and your family as well. Like Esther we are brought forth for a time like this, but if we are unwilling or unprepared God will use someone else.
