Silent Witness & Higher Ground - Joni Eareckson Tada's Art Series
"Joni Eareckson Tada, a quadriplegic artist, shares the stories behind her two remarkable paintings, "Silent Witness" and "Higher Ground." During a two-week horseback trip through the Rawah wilderness of the Rocky Mountains, Joni was captivated by the high-altitude meadows filled with wildflowers. This experience resonated deeply with her, leading her to reflect on 2 Samuel 22:37: “You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.” For Joni, this parallels the Christian journey where trials can feel like mountains, yet God's grace leads to new spiritual heights. Inspired by this experience, Joni painted "Higher Ground," named after the hymn by Jason Oatman Jr., symbolizing peace and solace found after navigating life's mountainous trials. Additionally, Joni's process for "Silent Witness" was marked by meticulous planning, especially to work with the challenging properties of watercolor. In this piece, Joni skillfully uses watercolor and gouache to capture the serene beauty of deer in a snowy wood. The scene reflects her profound awe and wonder at God's creation, inspired by Psalm 33:8, "Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him." Explore the profound themes of faith, perseverance, and finding beauty in adversity through Joni's heartfelt art.
