The Nature of the Prophetic Voice
"In the older covenant, there were two principal aspects of the prophetic word. The first one, and the one that everyone associates with prophesy, is the declaration of what was going to to come to pass in the future. This is the foretelling aspect. This was the basis of Isaiah’s taunt, the one he threw down to the pagan deities who, just like us, did not know what tomorrow might bring. They were not lords or masters of history, and could not describe the future for the listeners, because that history was not in their hands. And you cannot unpack anything if you can’t pick it up.
