Winter Solstice: A New Way to Approach the Dark Side of the Calendar - Sandy Osborn
"The dark side of the calendar. Beginning on the Autumnal Equinox, when the days are noticeably shorter, is when a lot of people begin to dread the months ahead. I long for the shorter cooler days and the longer nights.
A time when the world slows down, cools off, and gives us a time of reflection and rest. Seasons when the trees prepare to rest, then go into a
deep slumber. The bulbs of beautiful flowers have stored up enough energy to sleep and be ready to grow and bloom at the right time. Buried under fallen leaves and insulated under delicate snow.
I have always loved snuggling up inside and listening to the wind whirl, the snow floating down, or even a fury of white. A steaming cup of tea in my hand and a warm pot of stew simmering in the kitchen. A soft, warm blanket in my favorite chair. Fuzzy socks, soft against my toes. The coziness of winter is unmatchable.
I love the muted colors, softer light, and less harsh feel of winter. The seemingly endless hours of daylight and the heat are tiring and stressful to me. Fall and winter are when I feel most comfortable.
The days of winter allow quieter, soothing activities with less rush expected. Reading a book in your favorite chair, knitting something warm to wear. Baking, trying new recipes. Keeping the house full of tantalizing aromas and adding more warmth to take the chill off. So many elements of winter make it a time for us to recharge.
With a new perspective, Winter can make you feel rested and relaxed. Take some time to enjoy the cold months. The dark side of the calendar has many wonderful, magical things to offer us. Enjoying the changing seasons, like our ancestors did, makes the world a much more endearing place.
May God bless you and may you enjoy this winter and not just get through it.
