Made in Dublin: George Horn Gloves | The Last Master Glove Maker
"An NO18 Original Series. Episode 01: The Master Glove Maker
"You’ve seen factories all over Dublin disappear. That's the reality... and it troubles me."
In the premiere episode of our Made in Dublin series, we step inside the world of George Horn Gloves to meet Brian Horn.
The Story: At 81 years old, Brian is a guardian of a dying art. Since his father established the factory in 1943, the Horn family has crafted gloves for the world's most prestigious houses, from Christian Dior to Saks Fifth Avenue.
But this is not just a story of success. It is a story of survival. Brian recounts the golden age of Dublin manufacturing, the devastating factory fire of 1972 that changed everything , and the fight to keep the unique skill of "table cutting" alive on the island of Ireland.
About the Craft: Brian specialises in "table cutting," a precise method where leather is stretched and measured by eye before the blade touches the skin. It is a process that refuses to be rushed, creating a fit that modern mass production cannot replicate.
About the Series: Made in Dublin is a project by NO18 Films dedicated to the artisans, innovators, and characters that define the culture of our city. We explore the living fabric of Dublin, reflecting on its past and posing questions for its future.
